Muni Meltdown… May 14, 2007 at 4:11 am

My attention has definitely been on Muni lately – specifically, the lack of reliability on the N line. Having now worked in downtown San Francisco for only a couple months, and typically taking a bicycle to work (it’s faster, cheaper and more reliable then Muni – sad, huh?) I have had only 10 or so changes to ride Muni to work.

And boy has it sucked.

On at least 5 or 6 of the Muni trips I took, Muni was completely broken or rendered basically useless in some way. One day all the trains were stacked up trying to get into the tunnel. The conductor was at least nice enough to get on the loud speaker to let us know he had no idea why. Another day, all the power was out on all surface streets. Another day the doors wouldn’t close properly. Most days, the trains are, at a minimum, stacked up in the tunnel when they get to Embarcadero – unable to go anywhere. LAME!

So this week I found out about a “town meeting” to express our concerns. After further research, I found all sorts of sites bitching about but also trying to help MUNI work. They are:

www.sftep.com
www.rescuemuni.org
www.gogeary.com

A lot of these sites lacked any real data about how bad performance on Muni is. I know the data is available – I read through the product guide for www.nextbus.com – but it’s not public. So I decided to write my own script to try and track the N line (for now – 33 coming soon!) to see just how bad service really is.

I’ll be posting the results of the script soon… Hopefully before Wednesday.
